{"id":1096,"date":"2018-08-31T21:00:06","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T21:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leaktools.com\/blog\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2019-02-21T16:00:19","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T16:00:19","slug":"understanding-the-winter-blow-out-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.leaktools.com\/blog\/understanding-the-winter-blow-out-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding the Winter Blow-out Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What happens underground in the winterizing process?\u00a0 By setting up a clear PVC\u00a0pipe system\u00a0we can visualize the process and\u00a0some of the challenges to\u00a0winterizing pipes. \u00a0 This demonstration shows us that effectively utilizing\u00a0the proper equipment and \u00a0technique for blowing out plumbing lines is crucial for\u00a0consistent, successful winterization.\u00a0It is important to understand the three main phases of the process:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Water purge phase<\/li>\n<li>Line clear phase<\/li>\n<li>Sealing\/securing phase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZbtfLA9RQX8?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the water purge phase, the water that fills the lines is \u201cpushed\u201d out of the pipe and replaced with air.\u00a0 Several factors are important to accomplish this part of the process effectively.\u00a0 First of all, the air source you use must provide enough air pressure to counter the back pressure of the water in the pool.\u00a0 When blowing out return lines this is a pretty low threshold, however when purging water from the main drain line a minimum of 4 psi of pressure must be achieved to push against the 8 feet of water in many deep ends.\u00a0 The second important factor during the purge phase is the amount of water flow that can be\u00a0pushed through your blow-out plugs.\u00a0 The wider these plugs open under the appropriate pressure the more water you will be able to clear from the line at a fast rate.<\/p>\n<p>The line clearing phase happens after most of the water has been purged from the lines but may still remain in low parts of the plumbing.\u00a0 Your ability to generate a high air flow rate through the purged lines is the critical factor in successfully blowing this remaining water from these locations.\u00a0 Choose an air source that delivers at least 100 cubic feet per minute (cfm)\u00a0of air flow &#8211;
